Our sinfulness...
The four evils I have just named are truly terrible, and from all of them everyone is ready to say, Good Lord, deliver us! Yet none of these, nor all of them together, are as bad as sin. Therefore our prayers should be more to be delivered from sin, and if God hear no prayer else, yet as to this we should say, We beseech Thee to hear us, good Lord!"
Ralph Venning. SIN, The Plague of Plagues, 1669
SIN, WHEN VIEWED BY SCRIPTURE LIGHT
Sin, when viewed by scripture light,
When the gospel trumpet sounds,
When the cross I view by faith,
Satan, for awhile debarred,
What before excited fears,
Often thus, through sin’s deceit,
O my Lord, what shall I say?
Made, by past experience, wise,
John Newton, Olney Hymns (London: W. Oliver, 1779)
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Romans 6:12-14 ESV
As Christians we should all be mortifying sin. We must deal radically with our sin and put it to death! Oh, that God would grant us much grace and mercy! We should have a great desire to be delivered from our sin and seek after Christ in those times of temptation. Look up brother, Look up sister, Look to Christ! Live for the Glory of God and desire Him above all!!
